history
Our History Dates Back 85 Years…
Since 1936 we have been the pioneer in the pre-cooling and cold storage industry.
From the first wagonload of lettuce in 1916 until today, Salinas Valley – the Salad Bowl of the World – has been the major producer of fresh produce consumed around the country and the world.
Our 28-Acre Pre-Cooling, Cold Storage, and Processing campus has been a major fixture in Salinas Valley since our founding. The name “iceberg lettuce” was coined in the 1930’s when train cars full of lettuce were shipped cross-country using block ice produced at our GIC facility.
Our GIC Salinas Campus will be one of the largest most technologically advanced pre-cooling, cold storage and processing facilities in the nation.
This 28-acre campus will be the only facility of its kind to leverage renewable energy, automation, intelligent temperature monitoring, solar-lined shade bay, and enhanced truck flow to increase shelf life and improve the quality of fresh produce.
